YURI

The mayor and his brother parted ways, leaving Dixon and me alone. Dixon let out a slow breath, then turned his big, sad expression to me. It never fails to surprise me, the breadth and depth of emotion he conveys in a simple look. I do not know how eyes which can sparkle with mischief and delight are also capable of such profound sympathy and sadness.

“Did you hear that, Yuri? Otto’s in a real pickle and even his own brother won’t help him out.”

What I heard was that Otto had a history of doing such things, and Herschel had to be sensible enough for the both of them. But simply disagreeing with Dixon was unlikely to help him see the other side of the story. Not when Otto thought so much like a Spellcrafter, it was a wonder an enchanted quill had never fallen from the sky into his hands.

Herschel, on the other hand, was notoriously tough with Spellcrafters—utterly exacting in the way he expected them to adhere to every last rule and statute.

Once the echoing footsteps of the Hotti brothers faded, we sneaked back to the information desk. The elderly clerk was now eating a sandwich, with a scattering of crumbs on the countertop and a dribble of mustard on his tie. “I guess it’s your lucky day. I’ve never seen a bond so low. Makes you wonder why Mr. Silver is still sitting there when his bail is only twenty bucks. Maybe he was just waiting till lunch was served.” He waved his sandwich and crumbs flew. “You just can’t beat a good pastrami.”

“It must be our lucky day!” Dixon enthused. “See, Yuri, I told you dusting under the fridges would be totally worth it. Say, what other sorts of sandwiches do they serve around here?”

“Well, let’s see. There’s a turkey club. A ham and cheese on marble rye. And when the kitchen is feeling adventurous, a chipotle chicken wrap.”

“Wow—so many good lunch meats! But what about egg salad?”

While Dixon and his new friend discussed various sandwiches, I leaned over the books…only to see pepper from the edge of the pastrami had scattered over the open page. The entry beside Ladin Silver’s name was clearly two thousand dollars, not twenty. But a grain of pepper—the exact size of a decimal point—had landed in just the right spot to knock nineteen hundred and eighty dollars off the bail…which made it very affordable.

As long as that pepper didn’t go anywhere.

Meanwhile, Dixon was saying, “—and, of course, egg salad can also be served on a bed of lettuce. Isn’t that funny, how it’s called a bed? It’s not like we have a couch of tomatoes, or an asparagus chair. Though maybe we should—the internal rhyme structure is certainly intriguing—”

“Pay the bail,” I barked, and both men jumped. I modulated my voice and added, “Since when is one sandwich ever enough for Ladin Silver? Have him released before he cleans them out of pastrami.”

Dixon patted down his jacket. It took three pattings
